Essentials to stay in Koh Tao

Getting to Koh Tao

Koh Tao is only accessible by boat. It is therefore possible to take a ferry either from the mainland from the towns of Chumphon and Suratthani, or from Koh Samui or Koh Phangan.

Getting around the island

As the island is very small, you'll rarely have more than 5 km between two points, so it's possible to visit it entirely on foot. If you don't feel like walking, you can also rent scooters or bicycles.

When to go?

You can visit Koh Tao all year round, but temperatures are most pleasant between March and August. Conversely, if you want to avoid the rainy seasons, avoid visiting between September and November.

Lodging near the busiest beach

Koh Tao's liveliest area, Sairee Beach is the ideal place to stay if you want to enjoy beautiful white sand beaches and a festive atmosphere.

To stay in the central village of Koh Tao

With its many shops and restaurants, accommodation in Mae Haad represents the best alternative for those wishing to discover Koh Tao while taking advantage of the village's various amenities.

To stay on the wild side of the island

Renowned for its wild landscapes and less touristy feel, Tanote Bay is the ideal place to stay for travelers in search of tranquility.

Areas where to stay in Koh Tao

Let’s get to the heart of the matter with a review of the main areas where we recommend staying in Koh Tao.

Accommodation at Sairee Beach, the island's liveliest beach

Koh Tao Sairee Beach

Located on the western side of Koh Tao, Sairee beach is undoubtedly the island's most famous and liveliest. The longest stretch of sand stretching for almost 2km, it's also the most popular with tourists, whether to enjoy the white sand and turquoise waters during the day or to make the rounds of the many bars in the evening.

Mainly renowned for its nightlife, Sairee Beach is the ideal place to stay for those who want to party. After dark, Sairee Beach hosts numerous night markets, concerts and DJ sets, and some bars even stage fire shows.

Beyond its festive aspect, this is the area where you'll find the most accommodation, thanks to its ideal position for easy access to Koh Tao's other tourist attractions.

Many activities are available here, including snorkeling to explore the seabed and diving schools all along the shore. It's also the starting point for most of the island's hiking trails.

So if you choose to stay close to Sairee Beach, you'll be able to enjoy all these activities night and day. And if you don't fancy the festive atmosphere, there are other advantages to staying here: with its westerly position, it's one of the best spots on the island for admiring the sunset!

Although it's not the most charming spot in Koh Tao, there are plenty of activities available on the beach, starting with diving and snorkeling.

If you want to stroll the shopping streets and buy souvenirs, Mae Haad is the place to go. This is where most of the shops are located. You can also take advantage of the many bars and restaurants. So, if you decide to stay in this area, you can take advantage of all these facilities.

As its name suggests, it is home to many black-tip sharks and is even considered one of Thailand's best spots for swimming with sharks. What's more, although turtles can be seen all over Koh Tao, Shark Bay is the only place where you can be sure of seeing one every day.

So, if you want to stay right on one of the most beautiful beaches and increase your chances of seeing turtles, this is the area to stay.

Be warned, however, that this area is one of the most expensive in Koh Tao in terms of accommodation, and you'll find mainly mid-range and top-of-the-range accommodation.

It's also easy to get there by the day. So if you're on a budget, you can stay in a less expensive area such as Chalok Baan Kao or Mae Haad and go to Shark Bay by the day.
