How to get around?

One of the only practical ways to get around the island is by scooter. You'll find numerous rental agencies in the major towns. Note that cabs are quite expensive.

Seasonality

The best season is from October to March, with temperatures between 20 and 30°. If you like it hot, you can come in April and May, when temperatures rise to 35°.

The west coast

Most tourists flock to the west coast, where you'll find Phu Quoc's finest beaches. There's Duong Dong, the main town, and the quieter Ong Lang, with its secluded beaches.

The ends of the island

While in the south of An Thoi you'll find resorts, departure points for excursions to the archipelago and a great atmosphere, the north is quieter. Grand World is indeed more artificial.

Places to stay in and around Phu Quoc

Let’s get to the heart of the matter with a review of the main areas where we recommend staying in Phu Quoc.

Stay on the southern coast, near Duong Dong in the west

Duong Dong in Phu Quoc

The west coast, with its 30km of beach, is the first area to attract travelers. Naturally, this area is an excellent place to stay in Phu Quoc. The area around Duong Dong, the main town on the Vietnamese island, is a favorite.

With its lively atmosphere, you can enjoy the city center before heading down to the beaches. The most beautiful and popular on the island are Long Beach (Bai Truong) and Ba Keo. They're ideal if you're looking for a relaxing break, even if you're looking for a friendly, lively atmosphere.

Things to do include the popular night market, the small 17th-century Dinh Cau temple, Suoi Trang Park in Phu Quoc Narurel Park to see the Tranh stream, the Coi Nguon Museum retracing the island's history with maritime and forestry artefacts, and the Ngoc Hien pearl farm.

The best way to get around the area is by scooter. Note that you can only rent one in this area, as all the scooter rental agencies are located here. You'll also find scooters at the nearby airport, or in town. It takes an average of 20 minutes to get from Duong Dong to the island's only airport. If you'd like to explore the island by scooter, Grand World is 40 minutes away and An Thoi less than 30 minutes.

As for accommodation, it's mainly on the coast, just a few minutes from downtown by scooter. The majority are affordable resorts. The range is quite extensive.

In short, this is the place to stay for a first stay.

€€€

Lodging in Ong Lang, just above on the west coast

Ong Lang in Phu Quoc

Second place to stay in Phu Quoc, just above Duong Dong. This is undoubtedly where you'll find the most seclusion and peace and quiet. More peaceful, this little spot is more suited to those seeking tranquillity and nature lovers. The advantage of staying here is its proximity to the sea, vegetation and so on.

There's little to see in the area, apart from the Cua Can nature reserve, which is ideal for a stroll. To relax and unwind, you can take a dip in one of the local beaches, including Cua Can Beach and Ong Lang Beach.

Note that the sunsets are sublime and it would be a shame to miss this beautiful spectacle. Snorkelling is also possible. Please note: although the beach is cleaned regularly, sea currents can cause some garbage to be deposited on the sand.

The scooter ride from Ong Lang to Duong Dong takes around 25 minutes. If you want to go south to An Thoi, the journey takes around 50 minutes.

Hotels are few and far between, but very affordable. There are a few very upmarket hotels that stand out. For those on a budget, this is the place to be, as well as for those seeking a certain level of comfort.

Our recommended accommodations

€€€

A luxury hotel with a difference. The setting, with its sea-facing pool, wooden bungalows and villas, private beach and spa center, makes it a peaceful place to stay in Phu Quoc. You'll find two on-site restaurants, including one serving Asian cuisine.

Stay on the southern tip, at An Thoi near the archipelago of the same name

An Thoi in Phu Quoc

Many tourists also favor the south of the Vietnamese island, as there are many things to do in An Thoi, including excursions to the archipelago just below and the departure point of the cable car. Mixing a lively and relaxed atmosphere, this area is one of the three best places to stay in An Thoi.

Restaurants, bars and boutiques contribute to the overall atmosphere. There's also a harbor where excursions to the archipelago of the same name begin. These boat trips to islands such as Hon Thom and Hon Gam Ghi are ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving.

This is also the starting point for the world's longest cable car, at 8 kilometers. It's an impressive ride, flying over several of the archipelago's islands before ending on the island of Hon Thom.

As for distances by scooter, allow an average of 30 minutes for Duong Dong, 45 minutes for Ong Lang and an hour to reach Grand World. There are many interesting luxury resorts to stay at, as well as a number of inexpensive hotels. Most are on or near the water's edge.

Stay on the north-western tip, near Grand World

Grand World in Phu Quoc

The last area with tourist facilities is Grand World, in the north-west of the island.

Very quiet, it is home to the Grand World, a huge architectural complex with hotels hosting shows, stores, museums and more. Some areas feature Venetian architecture, and you can even enjoy a ride on the gondolas. You'll also find some great Asian and Vietnamese restaurants.

Please note that we don't recommend this area very highly, as there isn't much to do in the surrounding area. You can, however, choose one of the places listed below and visit this part of the island for just a few hours. Note that this large complex is somewhat deserted by tourists, who prefer more authentic locations.

If you're looking for a relaxing stay by the pool, you've come to the right place. If you're looking for authenticity, Duong Dong or On Lang is the place for you.
