The essentials for choosing where to stay in Split
Where to stay in Split
Let’s get to the heart of the matter. We’re going to take a look at the main areas where we recommend staying in Split. You’ll then find the breakdown we’ve drawn up to make it easier for you to find the area that best suits your requirements for accommodation in Split.
Staying in Split Old Town
The Old Town is the ideal place to stay when visiting Split. It's a historic district, located south of the coast, and represents the heart of Split's lively life. You'll immediately be won over by its authentic appearance, marked by the fortified wall that encircles it.
You'll find plenty of restaurants, cafés and bars to enjoy the district'slively atmosphere. You'll also find a wide range of accommodation options (hotels, apartments, etc.). However, this is the most sought-after district, so prices can be quite high, even if there are a few exceptions.
The area abounds in tourist sites such as
- the palace of Emperor Diocletian and St. Domnius Cathedral
- the Riva, the famous coastal promenade lined with terraces
- the Old Market
- republike Prokurative square
- the Archaeological Museum
- palača Milesi , a 17th-century palace
- game of Thrones Museum Split, a museum that will appeal to fans of the series (episodes of season 5 were filmed here!)
This is an extremely well-located place to stay. It's close to the landing stages where excursions depart. You can also reach Bevcic beach, which we'll talk about later, in about fifteen minutes on foot. This is a very reasonable distance compared to other areas.
On the other hand, if you're traveling by car, this is not the area to consider for accommodation. It's mainly made up of narrow streets that don 't leave much room for vehicles. What's more, you'll be hard-pressed to find any of the many accommodations or hotels on offer with parking facilities. In any case, if you choose to stay in this area, you'll have easy access to Split's most interesting places on foot.

Veli Varoš: one of Split's oldest districts
Veli Varos lies to the northwest of the aforementioned Old Town and to the northeast of Varos and Marjan Hill. It's one of Split's oldest suburbs, known as the home of fishermen for many years.
Its main asset is its particularly interesting geographical location. Indeed, it's a great alternative if you want to stay in an area with more affordable places to stay, but still within easy reach of the historic center.
On the other hand, it will take you away from the most beautiful beaches (Bacvice, Kasjuni, Znjan), but you will be less confronted with the mass of tourists in the neighboring district. It's a 20-minute walk to the nearest one.
Apart from the Marjan forest, which is just a few minutes away, you won't find any tourist attractions. But it's a pleasant place to stroll through typical Croatian alleyways and stop off at a local restaurant. On the other hand, the walk can quickly become tiring, as the streets are almost all on a slope. If you're traveling by car, you'll find it easier to find accommodation with parking in this area.

Bacvice and Firule: the main beaches
Bacvice and Firule are located to the south-east of the city. These areas are home to Split's most beautiful beaches.
Bacvice is the district closest to the historic center. You can get there in about 15 minutes on foot. It's also here that Split's main stretch of fine sand - indeed, its only stretch - is to be found. If you're looking to soak up the sun during your stay, this is the ideal place to stay. What's more, you'll find a wide range of accommodation, most of it reasonably priced. There are also plenty of restaurants, cafés and nightclubs. In fact, it's a very lively area, and the perfect place to enjoy the Split nightlife. What's more, it's close to the coastal landing stages for excursions.
Further east is Firule. It's a little more out of the way, on the outskirts of Split hospital. Its beach is one of the city's most famous. It's known for its youthful clientele. Staying at Firule will suit you if you're mainly interested in soaking up the sun during your stay, rather than exploring Split. The historic center is just a twenty-minute walk away. And Firule is a fairly quiet area, the perfect place to stay for a relaxing vacation by the sea. There are a number of modestly priced places to stay.

Accommodation in Lucac, a good compromise for exploring Split
Lucac is located to the northeast of the historic center. It borders rue Radunica, with which it is often associated.
This is the historic suburb. Indeed, it's a very typical and authentic area. It's also close to the center, but also to the beaches, especially Bacvice. It's a popular place to stay, as it's just a few minutes' walk from the old town and its sights. You can easily get to
- diocletian's Palace
- maritime Museum
- the Natural History Museum
- the Riva, the famous coastal promenade
What's more, it's a great place to stay, with plenty of accommodation to suit all budgets. It's a good compromise for getting around Split. However, it 's difficult to get around by car and to find a place to park. We therefore do not recommend this area if you have a car.
€

€€

Accommodation in Varos and on Marjan Hill
Varos is administratively linked to Veli Varos. We've decided to keep them separate, but you'll find information on eastern Veli Varos earlier in this guide.
The rest of the district consists mainly of the huge park and hill of Marjan. This is the ideal place for the more adventurous among you. You can walk up the hill and organize hikes in the forest. Just the thing to liven up a long stay, for example. This is also where you'll find some beautiful beaches, including :
- Obojena to the south of Varos. It is made up of several small coves with a large swimming area.
- Kasjuni Beach to the west, at the foot of Marjan Hill. This is one of Split's most beautiful beaches, even though it is made up of pebbles.
- Bene Beach, the northernmost beach. Quite out of the way, it's considered a family beach, with plenty of activities.
Varos is also home to Split's most famous viewpoint: Vrh Telegrin. It offers spectacular views of the city and its monuments. Don't miss it!
The accommodation on offer is interesting. You'll find plenty of hotels where to stay in the center of the district, at a fraction of the cost of other areas. But the closer you get to the hill, the fewer places there are to stay. Restaurants are few and far between, and nightlife is virtually non-existent.
€
Picturesque apartments just a few meters from the sea. The apartments are very spacious, with a terrace, access to a garden and free private parking.
€€
Located at the foot of the Marjan hill and a stone's throw from the beach. Rooms are very spacious and typically decorated. Accommodation with balcony and sea view can be booked. There's also a swimming pool and private parking.
Znjan and Stobrec to stay close to the beach
Znjan is located in the southeast of the city, after Firule. It's a quiet area, far removed from the city center and its tourist attractions. But for a second stay or a longer trip, it might be worth staying here.
You'll be able to discover beautiful beaches and enjoy the sea. You'll find a wide selection of places to stay, including some quite luxurious hotels. However, there are far fewer restaurants and bars here than in the more popular areas.
A little further on is Stobrec. Really out of the way from the rest of the city, it's located on a peninsula further south. There's a wide range of accommodation to suit all budgets. However, to get to the historic center and the most famous places of interest, you'll need to travel by car or public transport, which are fairly well served.
€€
Appart'hôtels offering classic and penthouse accommodation for up to 7 people. The ideal place to enjoy the sea with friends. The complex features an outdoor swimming pool, spa and private parking.
Accommodation in the north of the historic center: a good idea?
Manus and Lovret are two Split neighborhoods located northwest of the Old Town.
Manus is a lively area where to stay for a short stay. You can easily explore the surrounding area, including Split's historic center. Rentals here are affordable and sometimes cheaper than in the center. On the other hand, although it's nice to walk around, you won't find any tourist attractions here.
If you choose to stay here, you'll be moving a little further away from the Riva and the beaches. Count on a fifteen-minute walk from the southern part of the district, and much longer from the north.
Lovret is Split's northernmost district. For any type of stay, we advise against staying here. As well as being very far from places of interest and beaches, there's very little accommodation here. As you can see, you'll find better accommodation in other, much more interesting areas.
€
Inexpensive, traditional apartments in a location close to tourist attractions. It's the ideal place to enjoy the peace and quiet. Private parking is available nearby.
€€
This establishment offers very large rooms just a few minutes' walk from the historic district. It also features a restaurant within the complex and a relaxation area.
Summary
As you can see, the choice of where to stay in Split is pretty wide. In fact, beyond the historic heart of the city, the other areas are interesting for their proximity. Everything is within easy walking distance. It’s important to know the purpose of your trip so you can choose the best place to stay in Split. For a discovery vacation, opt for the hypercentre and surrounding area, while for a more relaxing stay, you’ll be better off in a more remote location.
As far as the budget is concerned, rates are generally quite high. However, it’s still possible to find a hotel at a reasonable price, especially if you can book in advance. And don’t forget that high season is summer. During these months, remember to book your accommodation several weeks or even months in advance
