Places to stay in Turin

Let’s get to the heart of the matter with a review of the main areas where we recommend staying in Turin.

Stay in Centro, the historic heart of Turin

Royal Palace of Turin

The Centro district, or Il Centro, is Turin's historic center. The entire center is within easy walking distance. Its location and liveliness make it the ideal place to stay to discover the city.

Within the area, the main sites of interest to see and visit are as follows:

  • Palazzo Madama, an art museum offering a beautiful view of the city from the top of its tower.
  • Piazza San Carlo, Turin's main square
  • Mole Antonelliana , building housing the Cinema Museum.
  • Museum of Egyptian Antiquities (or Museo Egizio), home to an important and magnificent collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts

The eastern part of the district is bounded by the River Po. In addition, in the western part of the district lies the Quadrilatero area. This is the liveliest part of the center and of Turin in general. Many restaurants, bars and shops can be found here. The Palatine Gate and the Royal Palace are the two landmarks of the Quadrilatero district.

Generally speaking, there's a wide range of accommodation to stay in the Centro district, especially in the Quadrilatero area. These are mainly hotels and apartments.

Accommodation in the trendy San Salvario district

Valentino Park in San Salvario, Turin

Staying in the San Salvario area is also very attractive. Less relevant than the Centro for discovering Turin, its geographical position is nonetheless very advantageous. In fact, San Salvario lies between Porta Nueva Station to the west, Turin's main railway station and Italy's third busiest, and the River Po to the east. It's a trendy, lively district, popular with students for its bars and restaurants.

The main sites of interest to see and visit in San Salvario are as follows:

  • Valentino Park(Parco del Valentino), a green area featuring a 17th-century castle(Castello del Valentino) and a reproduction of a medieval village(Borgo Medievale)
  • Cesare Lombroso Museum of Criminal Anthropology, with a large number of objects and photos related to this field

San Salvario offers a wide range of accommodation. Most are hotels.

Stay in Crocetta, for its elegance

Crocetta in Turin

Located to the south of the historic center and to the west of San Salvario, the Crocetta district can be a relevant alternative for visiting Turin. This residential area is mainly characterized by the elegance of the Art Nouveau buildings along the boulevards.

Major sites of interest in the Crocetta district include

  • Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art (GAM), home to collections of sculptures and paintings
  • Parco Cavalieri di Vittorio Veneto, a park dedicated to Italian cavalrymen who died in the First World War
  • Turin Olympic Stadium (Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino), home to the Dur Torino soccer team

Partly pedestrianized, this district is home to a significant number of bars, cafés, restaurants and boutiques. It's a pleasant place to be. However, there are far fewer places to stay. These include bed & breakfasts and hotels.

€€

Accommodation in Aurora, a former industrial district

In Turin's Aurora district

Staying in theAurora district, which lies to the north of Centro, is a less attractive choice than the previous districts. First of all, its geographical position is a little more out of the way to discover Turin. What's more, this district used to be an area rich in industry, so lacking in major interests to discover.

Nevertheless, the main sites to see and visit are the Porta Palazzo, a complex of indoor and outdoor markets, the Sanctuary of Mary Help of Christians, a 19th-century building, and the Lavazzo Museum, dedicated to the brand's coffee.

There's a wide range of accommodation on offer. Most are apartments. The interest in staying here is therefore rather irrelevant compared with the other districts above.

D'ora Relax

Spacious, modern, well-equippedapartment. Balcony. Very attractive rate.

Attico & Nuvole

€€

Very spacious, well-equipped and beautifully decoratedapartment. Balcony, elevator, bar and restaurant.

Stay at Borgo Po, in a vast green area

Villa Della Regina in Borgo Po, Turin

Accommodation in the Borgo Po district is another alternative for a stay in Turin. Located to the east of the River Po, this district offers very few advantages when it comes to choosing to stay here. First of all, geographically, Borgo Po is quite far from the central areas of Turin. What's more, there are few major sites of interest. There are, however, the Villa della Regina, a museum surrounded by beautiful gardens, and the Parco di San Vito, both of which are located on higher ground.

Accommodation is also very limited, with only a handful of hotels available.

Hotel Principe Di Torino

€€

Mid-range hotel with spacious, modern, well-equipped rooms. Good value for money. Bar and private parking available.

Summary

As we have seen in this guide, Turin is an interesting tourist destination to discover. Staying in Centro, in the heart of the city center, is the best place to discover Turin. The San Salvario and Crocetta districts are excellent alternatives for local accommodation. The Aurora and Borgo Po districts, on the other hand, are less interesting places to stay, mainly due to their more out-of-the-way geographical locations and lack of interest.
